How do you teach your kids to pray? At Crazy Cool Family, we tell parents, “Your example is more important than your instruction.” This concept is so true with teaching your kids to pray! Here are a few key things to think about.
My kids so remember me asking them to pray with me about an employee situation at work or wisdom on a business deal I was working on. Suzanne and I routinely told our kids about our lives and asked them to pray with us as we encountered situations. Age-appropriate here, of course, but including your kids in your issues is a powerful way to teach them to pray. And remember, they can understand more than they can communicate at every age so don’t worry if they don’t seem like they fully understand. They are definitely taking it in!
Bedtime is such a great time to pray. Establish a consistent routine to pray not just a token prayer, but a real prayer of gratefulness and asking God for help with specific issues in their lives.
“Wow, that’s terrible that happened to your classmate. Why don’t we stop and pray for their family?”
“I can see you are worried about this test. Let’s pray God gives you the ability to recall what you have learned and gives you a peace when you go in there this morning.”
When we default to prayer as we guide our kids in the issues of their lives, we create a habit of prayer in their lives – and hopefully ours, too!
Don’t tell your kids to pray. Show them how to pray by first having it be a big part of your life and then making it a big part of theirs.
